Promoting Access to Quality Education

Summary of identified gaps:

The Basic Education Act of Kenya states that every child has a right to free and compulsory education. Going to school, therefore, is not a matter of choice, but an obligation.
Unfortunately, this is not so. Children from poor backgrounds in slum areas in Nairobi, as well as children from pastoralist communities, lack this opportunity. Insufficient infrastructure for education has been a challenge to avail easy access to education for children in the underprivileged areas and it is not unusual to see more than 100 children sitting on the floor while attending class for lack of seats. Sometimes two or three classes are combined under one roof due to the inadequacy of classrooms and many children continue to learn under trees in parts of the ASAL counties.
CNHF has created a scholarship fund to help children from poor backgrounds attend school. The scope of the fund covers primary, secondary, and tertiary education.
We work to identify key infrastructural needs for schools and help provide these e.g. desks, learning resources like books, and other materials.
